Surprisingly, I'm not finding any ideas on-line! My fireplace is old, doesn't work, but I don't want to have it sitting there with candles or other junk stuck in it for looks. Any of you remodeled a fireplace into something else? The only thing I can really think of is shelves.

You can buy a log set and canned Gel Fuel and burn it in a non working fireplace, Miasma.

one of those tapes of a fire I have this version, it's AWESOME. I got it as a gift, and use it all the time for party background! quote:

We have an electric fireplace insert set inside our fireplace. It's not very cheap, around $200 I think, but it looks nice and works as a heater too.

I just had to have my fireplace lined and cracks filled in. It wasn't cheap, but we decided that we bought the house with a fireplace, so we wanted it to work. Plus, if you leave it as is, eventually, it is going to keep crumbling and you will need to spend more money on repairs for safety issues because you don't want it to crumble away. I have seen it done for as little as 1000.00 and mine was 2700.00 because it was really bad. It is funny that you posted this because I just had it done on Wednesday. We had our first fire in it yesterday. While I wasn't prepared to spend the money, I didn't want to have to spend more later when the whole entire thing would need to be taken out and filled in because it got so bad. So that is what we chose.

Cap it and install gas logs, but get the good ones! They'll cost around $800-$1000, but look soooo real.

ORIGINAL: miasma Hm, yeah, maybe I should try to have a professional come look at it, first, and see if the structure needs to be strengthened, before I do anything else. I will probably go with the shelves, my books need all the space they can get. We needed some repairs done in our firebox and then had a liner put in. It only took a couple of hours, but if it is falling apart on the inside, that might be the cheapest option for you because when they line it, they also insulate it so there is no worry about the inside falling apart anymore. If you leave it go, you have to remove the entire thing and then put something else there and that costs alot more. As for the outside chimney, we need to do major repairs on that, but are shopping around because the first quote we got was 13K. I don't think so.

I've seen some people put decorative metal fans there..although that's not really a useful idea, so may not be your thing.

How big is the fireplace? I have a huge fireplace in my lounge that's been sealed so I can't use it. I put a storage unit in it and it looks good. I still get dust and bits come down, so I don't put anything really precious (to me) on it.

Ooo, storage is a great idea! Since starting this thread, though, it looks like I'll be selling it, so I won't be doing anything. Some sort of storage would be ideal, though, thanks!
