I'm sick this week, a terrible head cold! The kids are great, working independently on assignments. My little guy sits with me, we read or play playdough. Big sissies are keeping him amused as well. I nap when he goes down for his. The older ones are keeping up the chores. When they were all younger I couldn't take a sick day, no one knew how to make lunch! But thankfully my olders are such a blessing. So, this mama is taking a sick day and resting up, in fact, I'm still in my jammies! How do sick days go at your house?

I have rarely had a sick day, so I'm not sure. I think if I were so sick I couldn't function I'd call dh to take sick day. I do remember doing that once when I had a stomach thing and could barely get up off the floor to call him to come home, but that was when TL was only about two and she was my only one.

I'm allowed to be sick??? I think the few times I've been really sick I just threw videos on and dragged myself up from the couch to put some food on the table.

When I am sick, I write my hubby an email and tell him that I am on survival mode which means that he doesn't expect anything more than the kids being fed. Sometimes that meant that the kids (when they were all small) were given cheddar cheese chunks and then they would get all the raisins, applesauce, baby carrots, and peanut butter that they want, and they would serve themselves. Now that the kids are older, they get more done on their own, and survival days are a lot more productive than they used to be. Because nothing was expected I could always feel good at whatever I DO get done. Also, I mark the day as a sick day for school whether or not we get anything done. BTW, I was sick this morning and David made all the kids homemade pancakes, and brought me a big ole chocolate pancake to me so I could have breakfast in bed.

I let them watch TV all day when I'm really sick...not even necessarily educational...GASP. And I sleep on the couch. Everyone can have as many popsicles as they want. If Noah isn't home and I have to make lunch, it is the simplest thing I can find.

There was once while I was pregnant with Thomas (#4) that I was really sick with the flu and then pneumonia. Ilene (my eldest) made sandwiches and set out carrot sticks for herself and the two boys for lunch, and Jacob (my second eldest) was on DVD duty ... I can't even begin to count the number of times certain movies were played that week!!! (Speed? I *am* speed!) Scott couldn't take time off work without the possiblity of losing his job, so we just did the best we could. He would start the crockpot in the morning and that's what he and the kids would eat for dinner while I slept. It'd be more of a challenge now with the 5 kids, but I think we'd still be able to make it work. (Plus the older two now know how to use the microwave, so they could even make Caleb's bottle for me)

I'm allowed to be sick??? I am rarely sick, but when I am, my son (since he was around 3) is my "doctor" and takes care of me (we call it health class...)...he does sometimes get a few more videos or computer time, but he is also very good about playing quietly in the room with me.

I'm allowed to be sick??? Only if you bring a note from your parent excusing you from class. LOL Well, my youngest is now 9 and the oldest is almost 16, so I can take a day off pretty much whenever I need to -- I have to remind myself to not take advantage!!! I do remember one time though, 8 years ago when my DH was away on a business trip. He was going to be gone for almost 2 weeks, so I decided to pull all the kitchen cabinet doors off and refinish them as a surprise. They had no less than 10 coats of paint (mint green being the top one -- with kelly green vines stenciled all over. They had to go.) SO, I stayed up till 3 a.m. power sanding the cupboards and covering the entire kitchen with a fine silt of paint dust (probably full of lead and asbestos, but...) and just as I was finishing I began to feel a little light-headed. I thought I was probably tired, so I'd just shower and go to bed. Then I could get up early and clean up my mess. My alarm went off at 6 am, I hopped out of bed...and collapsed on the floor. I dragged my bum back to bed and stayed there until my oldest -- then 7 came in and said, "Mommy, are you OK? Can I make some toast?" As she said the word "toast" my stomach heaved and I was finished. Sarah, bless her heart, made peanut butter toast for everyone. The smell kept me in the bathroom for hours. Then sometime mid-morning our pastor called to confirm a meeting that night. Needless to say, I cancelled. Not 2 minutes later, he called back and told me that his wife was threatening to kill him because he didn't offer to come right out and take care of the kids for the day. I tried REALLY hard to refuse. Imagine what my kitchen looked like -- everything covered with 1/8 inch of sanding dust, no cupboard doors and a 7 year old in charge of breakfast for 6 kids. Not a pretty sight. In the end, however, I swallowed my pride and they brought out soup and bread and played board games with the kids. Very humbling experience. We do what we have to do, right? Ugh. I wrote a novela. I'm done! Roligirl -- I hope you're feeling better this week!!!

Well .... mama's sick. If my neighbour is any indication (she's also a SAH, HS mom of 5) this is the oh so lovely bug that lingers for weeks. (She is on week 7 or 8 of it, and she is typically FAR healthier than I ... for her to get sick at all is a rarity) So this mama has pretty much zero voice, a throbbing head, and a throat which feels as if it is on fire. Anyone want it so I can back to my regular life???

I am with Rebecca - my kids are old enough that I don't have to worry about it. If my 22 yo is unable to run the house without me, I have done something wrong. When they were little, I pretty much did what Donna does - corral them all in one room and run movies nonstop. They have all known how to slap peanut butter on bread since they were 3 years old, so they never went hungry.

I do recall once sitting in the kids room lying against the door while they ran amuck in the room. Kids don't need constant attention and if you're sick, it's not the end of the world for them to eat peanut butter and jam or cereal and milk for a few days. It won't hurt them one little bit.

Okay, I'm finally all better, 2 weeks of coughing and blowing my nose! This was a tough one, it went through the whole house, but Mama got it the worst. My little guy just breezed through it, YEAH! I was down for just one day when my head was just too congested to think. The kids did great, they worked hard and were very sympathetic. I had three little nurses making me tea and getting tissues. We had some on and off days, with all of them taking sick days throughout the past two weeks, but it all looks good now. So glad we don't have to deal with all the constant germ interaction of public school, we get enough exposure just going to grocery store, library, and YMCA.
