Our daughter is a junior in high school and she has a little money set aside (around $5,000). We were thinking about putting that into stocks or something so that she will have a little more money for college. I see commercials like E-trade and other ones that supposedly make trading easy but I don't know anything about stocks, Is there a program you can download so you can follow stocks or "play buy" the stocks and see if you would have lost or made money?

HERE is a really good free place to research stocks. You can make a test portfolio and track how it does, there, too.

I would not recommend putting any money in stocks right now if you need to spend the money in two years. If your daughter has some money saved of her own that she doesn't need for college and she wants to invest, that's different. If you are interested in long-term investing, I would recommend taking a look at finance.yahoo.com for information on stocks. It's like a Bloomberg machine for individual investors.
