ORIGINAL: uncabeeil It stands for "Holman Christian Standard Bible". On Biblegateway.com, they have an online version of HCSB. Never seen it before until I went there.

NKJV, and NIV, are my regular choices. As a former good Lutheran, I started out on the old Revised Standard Version, but switched to NIV when the denomination went to using the horrible(IMO) NRSV. I figure that if it wasn't for the NIV, I doubt if I would be the Bible reader/student I am today. But, I am, undoubtedly, a bad Lutheran, nowadays

I'm like using different translations. I preach almost exclusively out of the ESV. In my studies, I will use the ESV, NET (New English Translation), the MLB (Modern Language Bible, or New Berkley Version as it was once called, and the ISV (International Standard Version. I do like the TNIV, and also don't feel the controversy is warrented, but it is going off the market with the new NIV 2011 coming out in a couple of years. For Children or Teenagers, I would personally use either the TNIV, NIRV, or God's Word Translation, I feel they are pretty good for introductory Bibles to use.

Like one of my professors said... "My favorite translation is of course my own!" I was waiting at the local Christian book store when they unloaded the Holman Christian Standard Bible off the delivery truck a couple of years ago... bought the first copy in the state before they got on the shelves... and the number one reason... At last we have a translation that actually gives us God's name, Yahweh, back into our English text! 83 times in the OT we have the name. (How can one call on the name of the LORD when one doesn't know the name?) Before that I had used the NLT for the six or so years before the HCSB came out. Of course, every thing I have in my feeble memory banks is KJV.

I have several translations and I find it the best way for me to really understand and study the Bible. I grew up with the NIV Bible and I still have that one which my mother gave to me when I was 18. It is old and battered now (ok I am only 37 so it's not THAT old...lol..) but I still have it on hand. I tend to use the Amplified Bible now as my daily Bible. I have a compact on that fits in my purse which I take with me everywhere I go and use at church. It is just ok for me b/c the print is so small and it does not have commentary but it fits in my purse so serves it''s purpose. My favorite is still the NIV but now with the internet I tend to go on Bible gateway or blueletterbible and read all hte translations for whatever verse I am looking at.

In response to the OP: (1) I use the ESV for most of my reading. I do dig out my NASB Ryrie Study Bible when I'm doing deeper study. (2) For middle-school level, I would recommend NIV or NLT. (3) My daughter is using the Day by Day Kids Bible. She is reading aloud to us each night. It is broken down into daily sections so as to be read through in a year.

When I study and I feel something is not congruent from translation to translation, I go the Hebrew and Greek and do a word study (Primarily through free on line Bible Study Software E-Sword). e-sword is free, and it's available on line HERE, but you'll need to install it on your own computer. You can then use it whether or not you're connected to the internet. I really enjoy e-sword, and cite the Turkish version in my blog HERE. Every time you read the Bible for the first time again, you see new facets of God's many-faceted wisdom. Unless we read the original languages, we are always reading through someone else's eyes. Reading the NT in a new language is a great way to learn that language, and to see new things in God's Word.

well, you can copy and paste from e-sword to other applications. See below!

I have a Life Application NASB that is quite literally beaten to death...coming apart, etc. So, I took the plunge and went to Lifeway...found a Ryrie Study NASB. Haven't really gotten into it yet, still attached to my beaten up Life Application bible. I also have a NKJV with the Chuck Smith commentary. I like that a lot too.

What Bible don't I read? I usually go through several translations to see what they have to say. I have an Life Application Study Bible which is an annotated New Living Translation that seems to be an easier read than most. There are actually quite a few children's Bibles out there and, In fact, I was pretty impressed with what Marvel Comics has done with the Bible.

I have 2 KJV, One I got as a kid 40 years ago and another I bought this year. My pastor primarily teaches out of the KJV, so it is easier to follow along with him with mine. I use a MacArthur NASB study Bible for my main reading and studying at home, Very easy to read and understand. I am also thinking to buy an ESV Reformation Study Bible as a secondary source.

Just found out that MacArthur is coming out with an ESV version of his study bible in August. Just some info. I have the ESV Reformation Study Bible and enjoy it. I want to get the newer version though with the updated 2007 text and the updated maps. I also have the ESV study Bible with I enjoy, particular the online tool you get when purchasing one.

Our kids used NIrV for a while an early readers version, but they are both reading NIV now. I also use Holman a bit, but only on-line. Our pastor who is a big Greek guru likes the Holman a lot. I respect his opinion. I like Holman too... it's just not as familiar to me. Oddly when searching by phrase on-line for scripture fragments I remember but can't locate I find I need to switch to KJV a lot to find them... I guess I must have memorized a lot of KJV early in life. I prefer to memorize NIV now.

I have an NIV Bible, was raised on NIV, and my church uses NIV. I like it, but I use my NASB intense study Bible for research and all that, but I kind of want to get a smaller (not full of 16 billion footnotes) NASB. I just don't want to have to transfer all my notes and highlights :)

I LOVE LOVE LOVE my Thompson Chain Reference KJV. It is my preferred one, but I do have others that I keep around, and will refer to if I am not understanding something, or if I feel a verse may have mutliple meanings. However, when I am reading from the Bible to my children's church group, I use NIV. Once in a while I will read from KJV and they just stare at me with a blank look in their eyes ;)
