This is a laugh, and an outrageously stupid thing to say. The Prez. to Senate Dems; quote:
Let me just wrap up by saying this. I know these are tough times to hold public office. I'm there in the arena with you. The need is great. The anger and the anguish are intense. The economy is massive and so, as a consequence, no matter what levers and buttons we press, sometimes it doesn't move as quickly as is needed to provide relief to so many of our constituents. In that kind of circumstance, I think the natural political instinct is to tread lightly, keep your head down, and to play it safe. Full Speech A slam-dunk response by the great Mark Steyn (from the Hugh Hewitt show) quote:
BHO: I know these are tough times to hold public office. HH: What do you think, Mark Steyn? Are these tough times to hold public office? MS: No, no. And I’m tired of this, too, because the reality is it’s tough to be a small businessman in this country now. It’s tough to be a small businessman facing huge rates of corporate tax, facing more and more regulation to pay, to pay for Senators with vast retinues the size of the average Gulf emirs. And the reality is that this distinction he keeps drawing between public service and the private sector, it’s the private sector that pays for the public service. I pay for Barack Obama. He doesn’t pay for me. And he and his pals should stop sucking me dry, and every small businessman dry, and we should restore a mutually respectful relationship where he stops reaching into my pocket and taking my money. Full interview

When my private sector employer was flirting with bankruptcy they began to fire people by the thousands. Those of us who were left were sat down and told that there was no such thing as "spending the department budget". ALL of our cash came from our customers. If we wanted to keep drawing salary we needed to be clear on that. There was no longer such a thing as "already planned spending", every expense was re-considered and eliminated or deferred if possible. Some people still did not "get it", but for most it sunk in. No more expensive furniture in offices, no more plane trips here/there, no more luxury business dinners. And... it got a LOT harder to just do our job - but we still HAD jobs. Our company survived and later merged and acquired again. Years later it can still become clear who went through a near bankruptcy experience and who still thinks that the money they spend comes from "the department budget". I still chuckle remembering some who SWORE they had company money that didn't trace back to a customer in any way, they had "budget money". The crop in Washington needs to realize they are near bankrupt and they need to plan OUR way out of it. The government is to serve the people (and businesses the people run) NOT the other way around and I don't get the feeling they "get it" yet.

When I hear this kind of thing, I always think ack to the early 90's, when all of the corruption of congress (the House Bank and Post Office, etc.) was being revealed and eventually led to the GOP taking Congress. So many career politicians bemoaned the loss of collegiality and good times, complaining that they couldn't go have drinks with each other and party hardy (with our money, of course) like they used to, poor priviledged little babies. That mindset still prevails.

Can anyone link or cite a tax put into place by the administration that would affect a small businessman? When I see this guy say the gov't is "sucking me dry" I naturally wonder the details of the no doubt myriad taxes that would so devastate and despair him. The only thing I've heard of is letting Bush tax cuts expire for people who make more than 250,000. Does anyone know if that's enough to suck a small businessman dry? What are the numbers involved there?

Letting the Bush tax cuts expire IS raising taxes. And the $250K category is gross income, which most small businesses fit into. So yes, I'd say it will suck the small businessman dryer than he was before, not to mention increases regulations under the EPA and other departments, and state governments, like here in CA, with stupid cap and trade laws. But again, the subject is the mind-set of our elected officials, who make these punitive and oppressive laws that affect our every day lives, yet expect to have an easy time when they return to their districts or states and face their constituents. It's just the arrogance of power.

Those payments come from taxes, that's how it works. And the current crop did not invent it, there's plenty of blame to go around, both parties, multiple administrations. I'm sick of all of them.

What are the numbers involved there? Reagan said business dosen't pay taxes- people pay taxes. 250k could be a small businessman, however the term is so vauge, a person making 250mil could also be a small businessman, too. Where I work at is probably considered a SB with 500 employees. Add to that the President, also wants to punish those who have moved work out of the country- something my employer has done for over 10 years, because their customer is expanding in Asia, and for expediency's sake they opened mfg facilities there. So are they evil corprate types, small business owners, or "Benedict Arnold companies", as the Obama prototype, John Kerry calls them?

Full interview I must have missed the memo where "slam-dunk" got redefined as taking something out of context? I'm also amused that he criticized Obama for mispronouncing "corpsman." Did he similarly criticize Bush for 8 years of "nucular"? -Dan.

ORIGINAL: iluvatar I must have missed the memo where "slam-dunk" got redefined as taking something out of context? The context is right. Obama is going on about it being "hard" to be in public office now, facing all the "anger" and "anguish" of their constituents. Well, excuse me if I don't join their pity party. Steyn's right, members of congress have cushy jobs with huge staffs, all on OUR dime. I have ZERO sympathy for them, and all the anger they're facing stems from their arrogance and corruption. quote:
I'm also amused that he criticized Obama for mispronouncing "corpsman." Did he similarly criticize Bush for 8 years of "nucular"? -Dan. Lots of people say "nucular", like many peopl say "calvary" instead of "cavalry". His point is that this was a speech by the CIC, who should know what a "corpsman" is and how to pronounce it. Only someone totally clueless about the military, or too lazy to find out, says "corpseman". Small point, but illustrative of how our great orator goes about things.

He didn't ask you to join their "pity party." The comments were directed to the Senators themselves, not the American people. One way of getting people to go along with your plans (whatever they are) is to sympathize with them and make them feel like you understand them. The point he was making was that even though it's tough, the easy road is not the best road. He's encouraging them to keep working and not give up. What's the problem with that? quote:
Steyn's right, members of congress have cushy jobs with huge staffs, all on OUR dime. I have ZERO sympathy for them, and all the anger they're facing stems from their arrogance and corruption. What makes you think that being a senator is cushy? quote:

Only someone totally clueless about the military, or too lazy to find out, says "corpseman". Small point, but illustrative of how our great orator goes about things. Just like "corpseman," "nucular" and "calvary" are both wrong, regardless of how common that pronunciation is. My point was that it's hypocritical to criticize a single mispronunciation by Obama while forgiving continued mispronunciations by Bush. I'd be willing to forgive either "nucular" or "corpseman" a couple of times, but I'd expect it to be rectified after some reasonable length of time. Obama's mispronunciation likely does bely some unfamiliarity with the word, but in his defense, it does have two silent consonants in the middle of the world. "Nuclear" OTOH is pronounced phonetically. If his mistake is evidence of laziness, what should be said about Bush, who continued to mispronounce nuclear for the duration of his administration, even in interviews when questioned about nuclear arms by people who pronounced it correctly? -Dan.

Obama was right....it is a tough time to hold public office now. Why? Because people are no longer just floating along and going with the flow. And, our votes are meaning something now. We are making our voice heard everywhere. It isn't just tough for Dems, but for Republicans too. If Republicans just ride this wave and don't make some changes and actually do something, people are going to have no use for them either.

I was in Texas a little over 2 years in the 80's in the Dallas area, pronouncing nuclear "nucular" was not unusual for Texans. I've lived in Florida for over 40 years; it is not unusual for a Floridian ("Floridan" to the old timers) to pronounce the word realty "reality. So much ado about regional pronunciation, eh? as the Canadians would say.

It was supposed to be "Cavalry", because it's logo was the cross swords of the U.S. Cavalry and the area was famous as a former Cavalry outpost. (I'm assuming all Christians know what Calvary is). But not only did everybody pronounce it "Calvary", they put that spelling on the kids uniforms - and they were nice uniforms. Been doing it for years. Nobody brought it up but me, and I found out everybody else in town pronounced it "Calvary". I gave up.

What makes you think that being a senator is cushy? If you're Evan Bayh, Blanche Lincoln, or anyone, be they D's or R's trying to do what's right for their state/country, it's probably not so cushy. However, if you're Chuck Schumer, Barbara 'I'm The M'am' Boxer, Harry Reid, or the other party lap-dogs, setting themselves, and their families up to be multi-millioniares on a 250k salary(hmmmm), I imagine life is pretty cushy.

I dunno. I suppose as long as The One can correctly pronounce "abortion rights", "gay rights," and "wealth distribution", an awful lot of CINOs are going to be tickled pink.

Actually it's historically proven that cutting taxes brings more tax revenue. As far as paying off the debt, if Obama was interested in that he would be cutting spending and taxes, not taxing more and adding trillions in new programs.
