ORIGINAL: creatief 6. Who will win the World Cup? That is difficult to say... I do not think that England is going to win. In my eyes England is the most overrated nationalteam. Just look at their league. Every team below place 5 would have a hard time surviving in the german or french league because they are more equal. The media says that Spain is favorite. I hope for the Netherlands (although I am not dutch). My favorites are: Spain, Germany, Argentina My predictions weren't so bad. Ok ;) The teams with outsider chances are out - except for Paraguay. Sad that only one of my favorite nations can be in final. I think we will see Argentina/Germany - Spain in semi final. Today we saw two great matches. In the first England played 15 minutes well, Germany 75 and so they deserved to come to next round. I am a bit disappointed that the Italian referee made such a big mistake. Without this offside-goal Mexico would have had a big chance to beat Argentina. For now I would say that Germany is a little stronger. But it will depend on which team has the better day and more luck.

I'm not very good at predictions but I have sneaking suspicion that Netherlands is gonna be in the mix somewhere.

ORIGINAL: VinceGuaraldi I really believed England had a chance to win this WC.England has a lot of individual talent that play well in the EPL;but they just cant seem to get it together when playing for their country for some reason. The pressure put on them by their media and countrymen must be enormous.Reminiscent of what we go through here in Columbus from time to time with the Buckeyes;but on a national scale.Hopefully Argentina beats Mexico today and we get to see another epic battle between two soccer nations Germany and Argentina.I'm looking forward to seeing Portugal vs Spain also. England was overrated, is overrated and will be overrated ;) That has nothing to do with pressure by media. This pressure you find in all top5-nations in Europe, Brazil, Argentina, Portugal and the Netherlands. The EPL is overrated too. There are so many teams in which you find very good player. Just look at Ajax Amsteram - Suarez. Look at the other top5-leagues. The Spanish league is not weaker, the French and German league have stronger midfield-teams and Italy has Inter. Their way to play is old-fashioned because they cannot play the modern football-style. They do not have player for such a system. You will find the reason for this in the PL-system and the English football-structures. I thought they will beat Germany because they have a solid defense through which weak guys like Oezil will not come and Mertesacker might make some mistakes. I did not think that England is the stronger team. England needs to change a lot of structues and the most important thing is to start seeing reality. For now the "strongest league in world" is not enough to have a good national team. The media in England sucks. They live 70 years ago - WW2... their headlines were embarrassing. They have to see that they need structural changes and especially in mentality (not only for sports). A dutch friend once told me that it is easier to live in glorious days and maybe that is the reason why a lot of people live in past. That is not only against english - you can find this in every nation. I think this also is a big problem with the english football. In English-PL-teams you find 64,5% foreigners while nearly no Englishman wants to play in other leagues. The Bundesliga has 49,0%, the Primera Division 35,1%. Ligue1 and SerieA around 43%. I do not want to say that they should stop buying foreigners. An other factor is the English Reserve League System. It destroys talents. So every English talent has two big problems. First: Getting motivated at the meaningless Reserve League and fight to first team. Second: To be better than the finished foreign player. I could write more about it, but then it will start getting to long. But the youth-system in England is very interesting to show what a nation should not do. There are France, Spain and Germany a lot of better. I think a lot of non-english European see this like I do - at both subjects - football and society. ;)

The Germany - England game also had a goal controversy. Even the German coach said England should have had the disputed goal that would have tied the match 2-2. Its hard to get interested in a sport where important anticipated matches are marred by horrible calls that change the complexion of the match. At least American sports admit when the officials make mistakes and make changes in an attempt to reduce the effects of human error (which happens). FIFA needs to deal with this horrible officiating. Just to be clear, bad calls are not an excuse for losing. Argentina & Germany were better on this day, the scoreboard tells no lies. The USA goal that was disallowed against Slovenia is about as close as it gets to a bad call costing a team a game (being so late in the match) in soccer but even then it wasn't an excuse. The USA didn't deserve to win that game, one bad call doesn't change that*. As a team (or side in "football speak") you need to deal with what happens and / or not play poorly enough at the beginning to where a bad call matters. But as a fan it still lessens the experience for me. * Besides we won the group anyway so in the final analysis it didn't matter.

There were some bad refs in some of the games I watched and it took the spirit of the game down a notch. One game, you could even see that the players were not playing hard anymore for fear of a yellow card. It took the competition out of the match. The commentators were commenting on the "faltas inventadas" - the invented fouls. FIFA could definitely benefit from instant replay even if only to review goals that might not have been legally awarded.

More observations (yea) Argentina- it looks like Maradona is "crazy like a fox". I love what he is doing. He has taken all of the attention off of the team. All the media are concentrating on him and not the team. So the Argentenian football team feels no pressure. They actually look like they are having fun out there on the pitch. If they beat Germany (and they will) they will be in the Final. England- The Capello experiment is done and it did not work, the FA needs to bring in an English manager. May I recommend either Redknapp or Fulhams great manager. Stop looking for great players and look for the right players. You had great players on the pitch however they did not play a team game. USA-Sunil Gulati need to swallow his pride and make Jurgen Klinnsamn the new Manager of the USA team. He refused to let Klinnsamn have the players he wanted so Klinnsman refused to become the manager. If not Klinnsman then bring in Preki. Portugal/Spain I am really looking forward to another great Iberian derby. Here will be the Semifinals. Brazil/Uruguay Argentina/Portugal World Cup Final will be..... Argentina/Brazil Who in there right mind would not want to see that final. It would be awesome.

The FIFA leader apologized to the affected teams and said he would look into goalline technology as he put it. This is a good response and really all they can do at this point (I oppose changing the rules in the middle of a tournament or season). We'll see how it plays out but they are doing the right thing so far.

This would be a good thing because, as one of the commentators put it, the refs aren't usually in the right position to see the goals clearly to make those close calls. Exactly. I don't think the officials are at fault. They can't see everything and make mistakes. quote:
but they need to refine the offsides rules as well. Good idea but FIFA isn't biting on that one. Its been said that the change would be helpful in getting more American fans but even that carrot doesn't move FIFA. Get goals awarded properly and accountability for officials and I'll be happy. quote:
One thing is for sure about futbol is the the players show more sportmanship after the game than in many other sports with the trading of jerseys and the post game congrats - it is a delight to see. The trading of the jerseys is great to see. In addition I like the way players will check on an opposing player after a "physical interaction". Of course part of that might be a desire to avoid a card. American football I believe has a similar level of sportsmanship. Lots of handshakes, hugs and conversation after the game. The prayer circle after the game (which has participants from both teams) is great to see also. quote:
The teams I want to win: Germany, Ghana, Netherlands and Spain. The teams I think will actually win are: Argentina, Brazil, Spain and Uruguay. 3 of the top 4 teams will be from South America. Yeah I think its highly unlikely all the South American teams will lose. Brazil vs the Netherlands looks like the best game and might have been the final but the groupings dictate they will meet before that. Argentina looks strong as well. If Spain plays up to their reputation they will be a threat as well. Of course once you get to this point a little momentum and good fortune could bring any side the cup. I'd like to see Ghana continue to do well (now that the USA is out, no sour grapes).

Well Brazil lost to the Netherlands. Hey thanks Dunga for making my prediction look boneheaded...lol. If Brazil really wants to win then they need to hire a Portuguese coach like....Jose Mourinho. Come on Argentina beat Germany. That Uruguay/Ghana game was epic. If Paraguay beats Spain then this will be the craziest World Cup of all time.

Looks like the Europeans have made a comeback. I never expected Argentina to lose like they did. I would have picked Brazil but I'm not surprised The Netherlands won. I am surprised that Uruguay (the favorite country of middle schoolers ) was the only South American team to make it and just barely (can you come closer to losing and not lose!?!?!). Did Brazil congratulate Holland or do the jersey exchange? They looked pretty ticked at the end.

I had a chance to see what I have always wanted. Spain vs Argentina for the WC final, and with England's defeat, I missed Spain Vs England......oh crud! I am a 2nd generation Spaniard, so my heart goes out to them, but I would have liked to see 2/3 of them play in the finals..... I miss cable....I want more than just highlights when I can find them!

Somehow I have the feeling that we will see Uruguay - Spain in final. Maybe it is because I hope to see the classic Netherland - Germany. But I think Spain is stronger than Germany (I thought so about Argentina too. But Germany had the perfect tactic). I also have the feeling that the Dutch defense will have some problems with Forlan.

Although I can understand your reasoning creatif, this has been a crazy WC. My brain says it will be Holland/Spain or Germany/Holland. However my brain also said Brazil/Argentina. I honestly thought that as young as Germany is it would eventually catch up with them. Alas it has not. I would love to see Uruguay win it all. Especially since they barely qualified for the WC. Forlan is special....we will see. Regardless it will alot of fun.

My wishes (not predictions) to win the world cup in the order I prefer them. Netherlands Spain Uruguay Germany I would be happy with any winner except Germany. But those are just my druthers.

Germany avenged Mexico! Maybe Mara"prima"dona will keep his smack talk to himself next time [wishful thinking]. Not only is Argentina going home, they are going home after getting spanked big time. Maybe Brazil and Argentina can show some more humility and respect for the teams they play next time. I want Germany to win it all! They are the highest scoring team so far.

Germany and Holland. I'm voting from the heart here. I really, really don't want a mental, possession team (Spain) to win boringly. Meaning the 3rd place game will probably be the more fun of the two.

This has been a good and very surprising WC. Though the officiating has been lack luster the over matches have been great. Looking forward to the final
